About Megan Craig

"Painting is a blind man's profession. He paints not what he sees, but what he feels, what he tells himself about what he has seen."

- Pablo Picasso

A component of art certainly is intangible; the emotional response of the viewer cannot be seen, only felt. When I make a painting or a drawing, I am not making an exact replication of  life, but rather a mirror of my perception. If the viewer feels touched by the piece (positively or negatively), or reminds him of some part of his life, then I feel satisfied.

For most of my life, I have been making art in some form or another. Whether I make it for myself or for someone else it is how I calm my world.  I studied art at the University of Texas at Austin and graduated in 2004.  I prefer working with oils, acrylic and watercolors. However, my works range from drawings to collage and a few sculpture pieces. I love to experiment with my work, as well as with life.

Generally, I choose to paint organic images; landscapes, animals and images of people are some of the major themes of my work. I also enjoy dark subject matter. I feel that art is a wonderful expression of emotion, and oftentimes the darker aspects of this get undermined because they're not considered "beautiful." I feel this is not so, that there can be a unique beauty found in the cracks and shadows. As a result of this, you will see a prevalence of blue in my work, juxtaposed with oranges and yellows to create interest for the eye. Painting has allowed me to look at the world in complex combinations of hues and values. The world around me becomes a garbled mess of shapes and figures until I my brain organizes them and makes them function in the everyday world.  Painting teaches us to see in ways more complex than imaginable.

I am currently playing with new color schemes, which you can look for in slides to come. Please take a few minutes to look at my work. If you would like to purchase one of the works, or would like to commission me feel free to send me an email for questions, comments and quotes. I also paint murals.
